SUMMER READING 2009 STARSHIP ADVENTURES @ YOUR LIBRARY
This summer, the Millis Public Library is the place to go for an out-of-this-world starship adventure! We will take a look at robots, fly through the air on an aircraft powered by human pedal power, and conduct our own rocket launches. Or you can grab a comfy chair and let a book take you on your very own Starship Adventure @ Your Library.
All participants in the Millis Public Library’s Summer Reading Program will be eligible to win a special “Educational Blastoff” ($100 Savings Bond)courtesy of the Middlesex Savings Bank. Ten lucky winners will be announced at the Blast-Off With Books Program on August 21st!
Reading has its own rewards this summer as well. All participants in the Starship Adventures @ Your Library Reading Program will be eligible to win special prizes. Each time you complete a full line in your book log (5 hours of reading or listening) you are eligible to enter the special ROBOT RAFFLE!

BLAST-OFF WITH HUMAN POWERED FLIGHT
Daedalus Project's
Light Eagle Human –Powered Aircraft
Meet world record holder, Lois McCallin
To celebrate the Greek myth of Daedalus, the man who constructed wings of wax and feathers to escape King Minos, the Daedalus project began with the goal of designing, building and testing a human-powered aircraft that could fly the mythical distance, 115 km. To achieve this goal, three aircraft were constructed. The Light Eagle was the prototype aircraft, weighing 92 pounds. On January 22, 1987, it set a closed course distance record of 59 km, which still stands. Also in January of 1987, the Light Eagle was powered by Lois McCallin to set the straight distance, the distance around a closed circuit, and the duration world records for the female division in human powered vehicles.
