Shadow of Night
Author
Deborah Harkness
Review
The second of the All Souls trilogy (A Discovery of Witches being the first), Shadow of Night moves the two main characters back in time to 1590, London. The vampire resumes his 16th century identity and falls back in with his old pals, while the witch flounders, trying to create an identity of her own. Although it takes an inordinate amount of time for them to get to their real reason for timewalking, the search for an ancient manuscript and a teacher for the witch, there is so much of the vampire’s backstory poured into this installment that needed to be related to the reader. If not for those details, we would be tempted to lapse into thinking of him as a Hollywood’s version of Dracula. He and his kind are anything but that in this imagining of a world where creatures abound. We are introduced to historical figures, which I find to be a hoot, and fictional characters who are dead in the story’s present time. The relationship between the witch and vampire develops and matures, and the witch herself finally seems to grow up and take charge of her own future. I didn’t want this one to end. The third installment, The Book of Life, is out, and I’m eagerly awaiting my turn in line!
